Run Lesson 1's recipe on the Seqtrak. Prove the method belongs to you, not to one machine.
You already know the recipe — drums, bass, chords, one top line, in that fixed order. What you don't know yet is the Seqtrak (you put yourself at ~20%). So this lesson is a test of the right thing: if the recipe is real, it survives a box you barely know. The method is the same. Only the buttons change — and this box actually makes a few of the steps easier.
A recipe you can only execute on one machine isn't a method — it's muscle memory tied to one layout. The moment you reproduce the same loop on a different box, the recipe detaches from the hardware and becomes yours. That's the entire point of today. Same finish line as Lesson 1: one grooving 1-bar loop, drums + bass + 2 chords + a top line. Different panel.
Before any notes, hold the two boxes side by side in your head. The Seqtrak has 11 fixed tracks; the Circuit Tracks has freely-assignable ones. That sounds like a downgrade. It isn't — for this recipe, fixed lanes mean fewer decisions, which is exactly what we want.

There are 3 "synth" tracks, not 2: SYNTH 1 and SYNTH 2 are the sample-based AWM2 engine; the third, DX, is 4-operator FM (the reface-DX lineage). There's also a SAMPLER track — we'll touch it at the very end as optional flavor, not part of the core recipe.
On the CT you can dial a velocity value into each step. The Seqtrak has no per-step velocity lane. Dynamics come from how hard you play in real time, or from motion-recording a parameter (like VOLUME) per step. For today this changes nothing — we're placing hits, not shaping dynamics yet. Just don't go hunting for a velocity-per-step control that isn't there. We handle groove dynamics in a later lesson.
The Seqtrak has only 7 synth keys for pitch — not two rows of scale pads like the CT. So note entry works differently. You have three modes; you'll mostly use the first.
Hold PAGE and press the Track knob for a synth track (SYNTH 1/2 or DX). Now each of the 16 step keys is a step: select a step, play a note on the 7 synth keys, and that note is parked on that step. This is the exact "which note on which step" move from Lesson 1 — the grids below map straight onto it.
Hold ALL and press KEY. The 16 drum keys turn into a piano layout (white + black keys, C up to C). Use this to find or audition notes across a wider range before you step-enter them.
Press Record and play the keys in time; quantize snaps you to the grid. More musical, but it reintroduces "perform it right" pressure — the exact thing Lesson 1 removed. Skip it today. Step input keeps every choice deliberate.
Same three locks as Lesson 1, on Seqtrak buttons:
A minor again on purpose — keep the variable that changed (the box) isolated. Same key as last time means any difference you hear is the device, not the music.
This is where fixed lanes pay off. No "which track is the kick" — the lanes are labeled. Select a drum track with its Track knob, then tap step keys to place hits.
On KICK, place hits on steps 1, 5, 9, 13 — the four downbeats. Your pulse.
On SNARE (or CLAP — your call, it's a separate lane here), place hits on steps 5 and 13 — the backbeat. The head-nod.
On HAT 1, place closed hats on every 8th note — steps 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15 (hat on every beat and every "and"). Want it busier? Use all 16. Offbeat-only (2,4,6…) is a valid flavor too — but on-the-8th is the standard starting groove.
Press play. You have a beat. Now press SWING and nudge it up — listen to it loosen. Swing is global on the Seqtrak (whole project), exactly like the CT's swing knob. That single move is most of what makes lo-fi feel like lo-fi. (Groove theory: EDMProd Drum Guide; lo-fi swing: Attack — Drunk Drummer grooves.)
Seqtrak extra you can ignore today, try tomorrow: per-step probability (hold a lit step + MUTE) and substep ratchets (×2/×3/×4) let one hat step stutter or play only sometimes — instant variation the CT doesn't do as cleanly. Note it; don't tweak it now.
Select SYNTH 1, load a bass sound, set it to MONO (Sound Design knob 2 toggles MONO/POLY/CHORD). Enter notes via step input (hold PAGE + the SYNTH 1 knob).
Play A on the same steps as your kick — 1, 5, 9, 13. Bass and kick locked together = solid low end instead of mud.
Change one of the four to a different note — try G on step 13. Now the bass has a tiny journey instead of a drone.
Select SYNTH 2, set it to POLY (so it sounds more than one note at once). Step input again.
On step 1, enter A + C + E together (A-minor) and give it a long note length so it rings. One chord across the bar is enough mood.
On step 9, enter F + A + C (F major). Am → F: a classic melancholy-but-warm move that fits all three of your genres.
Shortcut on this box: SYNTH 2 also has a CHORD mode where one key fires a whole pre-set chord. Tempting — but it hides which notes you're playing. For learning, enter the notes yourself in POLY. Use CHORD mode later when you want speed, not understanding.
Finding the notes fast: A-minor = A, (skip B), C, (skip D), E. F-major = F, (skip G), A, (skip B), C. Every-other white key. With SCALE/KEY set to A minor, the synth keys won't even offer a wrong one.
On SYNTH 2 an octave up (use OCTAVE), step-enter a short melody using only chord tones: E (step 1) → C (step 5) → F (step 9) → A (step 11). Steps 1–8 sit over Am (A·C·E); 9–16 over F (F·A·C). Every pick is a chord tone, so it can't sound wrong.
The DX track is FM (think glassy bells, electric pianos) — a gorgeous top-line voice for lo-fi and synthwave. Two cautions, both minor here: it's monophonic-feeling for melody (perfect, since your top line is one note at a time), and it's only 8-voice polyphonic — fine for a 4-note melody, but don't pile dense chords on it or it'll steal voices. For chords, stay on SYNTH 2 (128 voices). For a single-note hook, DX sounds fantastic.
Five extra minutes over Lesson 1 — that's your "new box" tax, learning where the buttons are. Set a real timer at step 0. When it rings, you stop adding. A finished draft on an unfamiliar box beats a perfect one you abandon. The finish line is the win.
The instant it grooves, the trap reopens — now with a shiny new box full of knobs you haven't tried. Don't. Drums + bass + 2 chords + a top line that grooves = a drafted track. Save it and stop. Exploring the Seqtrak's sampler, FM, and probability is a different session. Finishing today's draft on a second box is today's only win.
The recipe isn't tied to the Circuit Tracks. You reproduced the same four-layer grooving loop on a box you were ~20% on, in one sitting, with the same zero open-ended decisions. The method is portable — which means it's yours. Run it on the Seqtrak once or twice more this week; next time you pick up any groovebox, you'll know the first move.
Only if you finished early and the draft is already saved. The Seqtrak has a first-class SAMPLER track the CT doesn't: live-record a sound (mic, line in, or resample your own loop) and play it across the 7 keys. A single sampled texture — vinyl crackle, a field recording, a chopped chord stab — is the fastest way to make a loop sound like your lo-fi rather than a factory preset. (Ambient/sampler ideas: Sunwarper — dawless ambient.) Treat it as a reward, not a step.
